Find the Shark in You (part 1)

If you wish to go fast, go alone --- if you wish to go far, lets go together. We can not be successful individually, we need others for this incredible life.

I had visited Japan many times, and every time I had something new to keep me inspired … it is great nation. First time was in the middle of 80s, the second visit I was an exchange international student at Hiroshima University. My third visit was one year after the  tsunami on March 11, with young leaders from the UAE who brought 1000 wishes of origami from the people of the UAE.

One of the  most unforgettable story to share with you is about fish, fishing and quality. Fish is a traditional Japanese dish and an every day staple. Originally, fishing companies were near the shore. Later on they decided to move in the ocean.

As the new catch reached the customers, they complained that the taste of the the food has changed. In order to address the customer satisfaction, businesses decided to install refrigerators in each fishing boat to keep the fish as fresh as possible. The customer still complained about the change in taste. The companies did not ignore the customer complaints and designed pools inside the boat to keep the fish in ocean conditions, until it reaches the customer.

The Japanese are very careful of the taste. In a while, the same problem re-appeared. So, they [needed a very creative idea on how to bring healthy and fresh fish from the source to customers. What to do ? One of the creative leaders of the company suggested to introduce a few small sharks in each pool to agitate the fish. These sharks ate approximately 10% of the fish in each pool. The rest of the fish were alert and they tasted fresh.

The moral of the story? We must be the shark or we need a shark to keep us moving, creating and producing. Are you a shark ? If not then, find one ! This story is a great metaphor for inspiring ourselves and push others forward. Because we often face ups and downs in our lives.
